During the early 1900s the GAA became symbolic for many Irish people in their struggle for independence from Great Britian. It was a way of Nationalists proving their irish identity. Many children started playing the sport as more people began to value the Irish language and culture.
As troubles with Great Britain began escalating, there was huge shock and outrage around the country when Croke Park was bombed in 1920 during the war of independence. This event has since become known as Bloody Sunday.
